How pet consolidation works across all accounts

There have been a lot of questions about how pets will be consolidated across multiple toons, especially with the 500 pet limit and the maximum of 3 of each type of pet (ie. you can only have 3 Spawn of Onyxia or 3 Adders).  Mumper clarified how this will work.

Pets will still be merged on MoP launch, but instead of placing them in your bags or mail they will be placed directly in your pet journal.  You will be allowed to have more than 500 and 3x per pet during this process.  Any pets that are flagged as unique will be merged into one and also placed in your journal. (Unique pets are from Achievements, Pet Store, Promotions and Guild)  You will be able to cage any pets that are tradeable and you can release anything that you have more than one of.
A few examples:

  • A B.net account has a total of 6 Wolvar Pups across all of it’s characters.  On merge the B.net account would have 6 Wolvar Pups.  This would be the only time an account is allowed to have more than 3x of a single pet.
  • A B.net account has a total of 3 Murky’s from BlizzCon 2005 and 4 Nuts from the pet collection achievements across all of it’s characters. (both unique pets)  On merge the B.net account will have 1 Murky and 1 Nuts.

Hope that helps clear things up. (Source)

Unfortunately it is bad news for those who thought they could sell excess rare pets, since many of those will be consolidated.

Pet Battles willl continue to add more diversity

For those of you hoping to see pet battles continue to evolve, you are in luck.  Mumper has confirmed there will be updates with every single patch.

We will be adding more diversity as we progress through the patches, it’s something we know about it.  You have to remember that most of the critters in the world were animals.  We added as many new pets as we could without disrupting the general feel of the world.  There is a unique pet in almost every zone in the game now.  We took care to try and make these pets fit in the different family’s.  (undead, dragonkin, aquatic, elemental etc.)

This is just the beginning, we will be supporting the system with new updates every single patch. (Source)

Good news!

Fox Kit rare drop pet can be purchased for 200 Tol Barad Commendations

Good news for those with incredibly bad luck farming the Fox Kit, when the pre-Pandaria patch hits, you can purchase it for 200 Tol Barad Commendations.

As you can imagine, Tol Barad & Tol Barad Peninsula will soon become popular with people farming those commendations to purchase the pet.  Nice change!

Now costs gold to heal up your battle pets

Incase you haven’t been back on beta since today’s maintenance and update, it now costs 10s to heal up your battle pets at a Stable Master.  10 Silver is pretty nominal, especially with the reduced cooldown on the Revive Battle Pets spell (which went from 15 minutes to 10 minutes in the previous update).

Interesting fee that reminds me of the token fee charged for getting ported to the Darkmoon Faire portal from a city.

Pet Battle Cooldown reduced from 15 mins to 10

If you have been grinding pet battle levels, especially in places like the Plaguelands where stable masters are few and far between, that 15 minute pet cool down was pretty crazy.  Some had started logging into alts and healing their pets from there (added: which is why you sometimes see the warning that pets are currently being used by another character immediately after switching toons or after being disconnected – there is a new 3 minute CD upon logging in before you can use the revive battle pet spell) to make the process easier, so the CD change to 10 minutes was a pretty great move.

We have reduced the cool down to 10m in the next build.  Don’t forget you can get single use heals in the Sack of Pet Supplies from the Tamer dailies as an alternative to using the Stable Master or your Revive spell.    (Source)

Wow Pet Battles XP reduced for pets above level 15

If you were among those disappointed when you managed to capture a high level pet only to see the pet level drastically reduced, Blizzard has made some nice changes.  Collectors were complaining there was no reward for successfully capturing a high level pet, other than the usual XP gains, because the captured pet’s health was reduced so much.  Here are the new changes:

We have made a few adjustments to the both the weakened by capture pets and the overall XP curve.  Details below!

  • Catching any pet level 15 or under retains its current level.
  • Catching a level 16-20 pet will lose 1 level.
  • Catching a level 21-25 pet will lose 2 levels.
  • We have dramatically reduced the XP required to level for pets after level 10.

Thanks for all of your feedback on this stuff guys.                            (Source)

It definitely got to be a pretty big XP grind once you hit level 10 or so, especially when you consider you need to grind multiple pets of a variety of specs and talents to be able to caputre higher level ones.

Many non-Capture pets are becoming rare

Blizzard has decided to make many of the harder-to-get collectable pets rare quality, which means they get a nice stat boost for those wanting to use them in pet battles.  And the list is a pretty impressive one that they included.

We made the call to convert a number of non-capture pets into rare quality pets.  We made this decision for a couple reasons.  First off, we know that many folks are going to want to use some of their current pets in pet battles.  We don’t want players to feel like these pets are weaker than the others.  At the same time, we don’t want to make every single non-capture pet into a rare.

We decided which pets to change based on how difficult they are to obtain.  This approach makes sense since it means that more time was put into getting these particular pets than other ones.  This fits in with how you obtain a rare through the pet battle system; more time to seek out pets and fight them, hoping for a rare.

We know that we are not going to be able to please everyone, but this list is just a start and I’m sure we will make many updates between now and launch.  Look it over and feel free to leave us your feedback.  Thanks!

Some of the included pets are rare drops, quest rewards and collector edition pets.  Here is the entire list!  One interesting thing is they included Darkmoon Balloon, so does that mean we will see balloon pets being used for pet battle at a later date?  Currently all of them are noted in the pet journal as being a non-battle pet.
